How to clean up inactive subscribers

Inactive subscribers are subscribers who do not open, click or in any way engage with the campaigns you’re sending them.

We highly recommend removing these subscribers from your list, as doing so will drive up your open/click rates. You also have the added benefit of freeing up space in your current plan for more engaged subscribers.

To clean up inactive subscribers, navigate to your Subscribers page. Then, click the tab labeled Clean up inactive.

Here you will see a list of all the subscribers that have not engaged with your content in the last six months.

Click the orange Unsubscribe inactive button to remove them from your active subscribers list.

If you prefer to keep only the best quality (highly engaged) subscribers in your list, you can use search filters to find subscribers who have been inactive for a certain amount of time.

For example, let’s say you want to find subscribers who have not engaged with your content for 30 days.

To do this, navigate to your Subscribers page to see All subscribers. Then:

  1. Search your subscribers with the filter: Time inactive.

  2. Choose the number of days of inactivity.

You can then unsubscribe those contacts by selecting all, clicking Actions, and then Move to unsubscribed.

Navigate to your Subscribers page and apply the Time inactive filter for your preferred period of time.

Then, instead of clicking Move to unsubscribed, click the green Save as segment button to save these filters as a segment.

Then, select this segment as the recipients of a targeted win-back email campaign.

While you can’t ensure that 100% of your subscribers are going to love and read your newsletter every time, there are simple adjustments you can make in order to maximize engagement:
